Cherub Wallet

5 Mar

I bought this gorgeous cherub fabric in a second hand store in Prague. For ages it has just been sitting around waiting for me to turn it into something. I like to think in its prior life it was something very elegant, perhaps a curtain from some aristocrats castle so it had to be something worthy of a resurrection.

Level: Medium

Time taken: 5 hours

Things you will need: Heavy fabric for outer, cardboard, plastic for waterproofing, light fabric for inner, 1 x domes.

Steps to make:

Measure your cardboard width ways depending on how many cards you want to be able to comfortably fit in there. (I found it very convenient using the cover off an exercise book).

Now measure it length ways to make sure you will be able to fit notes in there with plenty of room. You probably will have noticed by now I don’t like to be too specific with measuring…

Now if you are like me, your wallet will be prone to a little spillage now and then (most likely some form of alcohol), so you will need to waterproof this baby to stop your cardboard going soggy. I glued the remains of a courier bag to the cardboard.

Fit the outer material to your cardboard. To make the corners, pull the corner of material directly over the corner of the cardboard then fold the loose pieces on each side toward the corner.

Now it is time to organise your inner fabric. The two back pieces will make up the pocket for your notes, the two front pieces will make up the pockets for your cards. The two back pieces you can make roughly the same size as outer fabric. The four small front pieces make the pockets for the cards. To get the correct size, pop your card over top, give a couple of millimeters allowance each side plus seam allowances. Make sure it will be small enough so that when you put the card in the pocket, the top is still poking out the top.

To form the top of the card pockets and front fabric for note pocket (the back will be sewn on directly), turn wrong way over and fold over twice then iron.

As you can see in the third picture I had already measured on the back fabric where I wanted the seams to attach at the edge of the outer piece of my wallet and lined up the pocket to the middle of one side. I then sewed on second pocket in the same fashion.

Now you should have 3 pieces, your outer piece with cardboard, the inner back and the piece we just sewed with both pockets attached. Place your piece you just sewed directly on top of inner back but about half a centimetre down from top seam of inner back (remember this front bit is going to be your note pocket so you don’t want to sew the top shut!) Place these pieces on to your outer back, I pinned it about 2ml from the edge.

Sew down the edge of three lines; the top, the left side and the bottom.

Now we need to add a clasp to the wallet to keep it together. Make a fastening using leftover material. Attach a dome to one end and the other dome as per picture 3 above. Finally, position your fastening in the middle of final seam and sew.

Now, to find some money to put inside…
